Tanner Hayes takes third to lead Marshfield at Wisconsin Valley Conference boys tennis meet

WAUSAU – Tanner Hayes captured third place at No. 3 singles title to lead the Marshfield boys tennis team Thursday at the Wisconsin Valley Conference Boys Tennis Meet at Wausau East and West high schools.

Hayes beat Shawn Hilgers 6-1, 6-0, to win the No. 3 singles third-place match for the Tigers’ highest finish. Marshfield finished fifth in the team standings with 10 points and combined with the regular-season dual meet results, took fifth overall with 32 points.

Wausau East and Stevens Point tied for the tournament title, but East won the overall championship based on the dual-meet results.

Marshfield’s No. 2 doubles team of Quinn Van Oudenhoven and Kohl Van Oudenhoven, and the No. 3 doubles team of John Weiss and Jack Haessly, each finished fourth.

The Van Oudenhoven team lost its third-place match to Eric Miller and Tony Shepherd of Wausau West in a tiebreaker, 7-5, 5-7 (7-3). Weiss and Haessly fell to Weeden Bauman and Rick Beckel of Wausau East 6-4, 7-6 (6).

Jacob Twardowski at No. 1 singles, Jason stone at No. 2 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Taylor Moon and Dan Bargender placed fifth for Marshfield.

The Tigers will compete at the WIAA Division 1 subsectionals Monday at Wausau East and West.
