Stratford’s Matt Zuelke among 4 local athletes to earn medals at 2nd day of WIAA state track

LA CROSSE – Three local individuals and one relay team earned medals as the WIAA State Track and Field Championships ended Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Stratford’s Matt Zuelke earned his second medal of the state meet, taking fourth in the Division 3 1,600 meters by running in 4:31.63. He took third in the 3,200 on Friday and helped Stratford to a 13th place finish in the team standings with 19 points. Rosholt won the Division 3 team title with 35 points.

Brookfield East won the Division 1 title, with La Crosse Aquinas taking first in Division 2 for the boys.

The girls team titles were won by Milwaukee Bradley Tech in Division 1, Wrightstown in Division 2 and Edgar in Division 3.

Auburndale’s Kelly Tomfohrde also earned a fourth-place medal on Saturday in the Division 3 girls pole vault. Tomfohrde had a vault of 9 feet, 9 inches, to finish in fourth. The event was won by Edgar’s Faryn Wirkus, who set a new D-3 record with a vault of 11-7.

The Marshfield Columbus girls 400 relay team, and Marshfield’s Jeremy Robinson both grabbed sixth-place medals for their schools’ only hardware at the state meet.

The Columbus relay team of Mariah Heiman, Lindsey Brandt, Abigal Gotz and Kayla Selz ran in a time of 51.76 seconds to take sixth. Edgar won in 49.94 seconds.

Robinson, who was seeded second in the triple jump, finished sixth with a leap of 44 feet, 9 inches to nab a medal. Aaron Dillon of Brookfield East won the event with a jump of 47-1½.

Others competing Saturday who did not earn medals were: Marshfield’s Dan Kniech (ninth, Division 1 boys 110-meter hurdles, 15.06); Auburndale’s C.J. Castellano (14th, Division 3 boys high jump, 5-10), Lakisha Sutton (ninth, Division 3 girls 200 meters, 26.87), and Danica Harrison (ninth, Division 3 girls 3,200 meters, 12:09.30); and Spencer’s Marcie Hebert (11th, Division 3 girls discus, 104-4).
