WESTON – The Marshfield girls soccer team survived a thrilling WIAA Division 1 regional final, downing Wausau West in a shootout on Saturday at D.C. Everest.

Eighty minutes of regulation and two overtimes went scoreless before the game headed to a shootout, which was dominated by the Tigers.

Marshfield (13-7) will play D.C. Everest (14-5-1) in a sectional semifinal Thursday at D.C. Everest. The game will begin at 7 p.m. The winner moves on to the sectional finals on June 11 at Wausau East against either River Falls or Eau Claire Memorial. The game will start at 4 p.m., with the winner advancing to the WIAA State Girls Soccer Tournament in Milwaukee on June 16-18.

The regional title is just the second in history of the Marshfield girls soccer program.

“I am so happy for the seniors,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “They have gone through some tough seasons and they absolutely deserve this, as does the entire team.”

West goalie Hayley Fochs was the difference maker for the Warriors. Marshfield outshot West 26-5, but Fochs made 15 saves in goal to keep the game scoreless.

In the shootout, Wausau West won the coin flip and Marshfield shot first.

Marshfield’s Darian Molter and West’s Marissa Paulson traded made shots to start the shootout before the Tigers promptly put it away.

Emily Wolfe and Allison Gruen made shots for Marshfield and Tigers’ goalie Kassi Todryk made saves against West missed. Emily Brix hit the clincher for the Tigers to spark a wild celebration.

“We have been practicing the penalty kicks for the past week in the event a game would come to PKs, and sure enough it paid off,” Lindner said.

Todryk had four saves for Marshfield.
