Marshfield freshman Darian Molter left her mark on the Wisconsin Valley Conference this season and has been recognized for her efforts.

Molter, who led the conference with 14 goals and was second in total points with 29, was named the WVC Girls Soccer Player of the Year and was one of four freshmen selected to the first team of the all-conference team.

Molter is the first Marshfield player ever selected as the player of the year, and the first freshman to earn the conference honor.

Joining Molter on the first team is Marshfield sophomore Allison Gruen, who was an honorable mention choice last year. Gruen scored four goals in conference play.

Coming into the season, Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said finding some goal scorers was the team’s biggest priority. The Tigers scored just six goals in 12 Wisconsin Valley Conference games in 2010. This year, Marshfield had 25.

“The coaches are very proud of all the girls who received the awards, but winning begets individual awards,” Lindner said. “The team has played so well as a team.”

Marshfield senior Sarah Wolff was named to the second team and senior goalkeeper Kassi Todryk, senior Alyssa Brenner and sophomore Maddie Smith were honorable mention picks.

Marshfield plays at D.C. Everest in a WIAA Division 1 sectional semifinal on Thursday at 7 p.m. The winner moves on to a sectional final Saturday at Wausau East.
