MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys soccer team dropped its season opener Tuesday, losing 1-0 in a nonconference game to Menomonie at Griese Park.

The game’s only goal was scored by Menomonie 6:52 into the second half on a Marshfield own goal – a ball that was deflected off of one of the Tigers’ defenders.

“We started off very sluggish, very nervous,” Marshfield coach Ron Todryk said. “Some of the players weren’t on top of their game to begin with.

“We settled down and started passing the ball, making our runs. We had three chances to score when the goalkeeper came out in front and left the net open, but unfortunately we couldn’t put the ball in.”

Eric Holm had four saves in goal for Marshfield in the first half. Trenton Todryk had three saves in the second half.

Marshfield returns to action Monday with a nonconference game at Sun Prairie before opening Wisconsin Valley Conference play Aug. 23 at Wisconsin Rapids and Aug. 25 at home against Wausau West.
