CADOTT – The Spencer/Columbus Catholic football team found itself in a close game again on Friday night, and this time it was able to snag a victory.
The Rockets edged Cadott 14-8 in a Cloverbelt Conference game Friday night at Cadott High School, keeping their WIAA playoff hopes alive.
Spencer/Columbus improves to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the Cloverbelt. If the Rockets win their final three games – at home against Altoona, at Neillsville and at home against Colby – they would automatically qualify for the postseason. With two victories, Spencer/Columbus would again find itself on the bubble with a .500 conference record. Only teams with records above .500 in its conference are assured of a WIAA playoff berth. Those at .500 are considered to fill any remaining spots.
Cadott falls to 2-4 and 2-3 in the Cloverbelt.
Cadott took an 8-0 lead on a 3-yard touchdown and a two-point conversion by Alex Glomski in the second quarter.
Spencer/Columbus stormed back to tie the game before halftime. Jordan Buss threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Josh Olson and the Rockets tied the game on a two-point conversion pass from Buss to Adam Skrzeczkoski.
Dan Hughes recovered a fumble and returned it 5 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter for what proved to be the game-winner for the Rockets.
Spencer/Columbus’ defense dominated, holding Cadott to 151 yards rushing on 42 carries and just 11 yards passing.
Charlie Mayeux had 117 yards of the Rockets’ 193 yards rushing. Buss finished 6 of 11 for 118 yards. Wyatt Phillips and Josh Olson each had a pair of catches.
Spencer/Columbus hosts Altoona (2-4, 1-4) at Spencer next Friday.
