Columbus Catholic boys soccer team shutout by Wausau Newman in WIAA Division 3 sectional final

STEVENS POINT – Marshfield Columbus Catholic’s upset run through the WIAA boys soccer playoffs ended Saturday with another shutout loss to Wausau Newman Catholic.

Paul Messerly scored at the 12:09 mark of the first half and the goal held up to lead the Cardinals to a 1-0 win in a WIAA Division 3 sectional final Saturday at Scaffidi Field.

The Dons, a No. 5 seed who upset three higher seeds on their way to the sectional final, was shutout by Mid-State Soccer Conference rival Newman for the third time this season. Their season ends with an 11-10-1 record.

Newman (20-2-2) moves on to the WIAA State Boys Soccer Tournament at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee. The Cardinals will play Prairie School of Racine in a Division 3 semifinal Friday morning.
