SPENCER – The Spencer volleyball team enacted the revenge it was looking for, sweeping Auburndale 3-0 in a WIAA Division 3 regional final Saturday night at Spencer High School.

The Rockets, who lost in the regional semifinals to Auburndale a year ago, beat the Apaches 25-23, 25-13, 25-13 to advance to Thursday’s sectional semifinal against Marathon. Game time is 7 p.m. at Auburndale High School.

Tara Matter had 14 kills and Courtney Schulz added 13 kills. Each had two blocks as well for the Rockets.

Dani Johnson led the defense with 15 digs and Alicia Endreas added 10, and setter Kyleigh Hebert contributed 30 assists for Spencer.

Auburndale statistics were not provided.

“We played with more energy than I have seen in my 11 years of coaching,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “Our defense was outstanding. This group really deserves this opportunity.”

The winner of Thursday’s match plays the winner of the Oconto-Kewaunee match in the sectional final next Saturday at Edgar for a berth in the WIAA State Girls Volleyball Tournament in Green Bay.

Spencer has made only one state appearance in its history, losing a Class C semifinal in 1974.
