SPENCER – Spencer outscored Loyal 18-3 in the third quarter to blow out a pesky Loyal squad 56-37 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division boys basketball game Thursday night at Spencer High School.

The Rockets jumped out to a 14-4 lead after the first quarter only to see Loyal climb back in it and cut Spencer’s lead to 25-21 by halftime.

Spencer responded well after the intermission, blowing past Loyal and ending a two-game losing streak. The Rockets improve to 13-5 overall and 12-2 in the Cloverbelt East, closing to within one-half game of the conference lead behind Marshfield Columbus Catholic, who played a nonconference game Thursday at Rib Lake.

Ben Bonitz was 6-for-8 from the field and led Spencer with 12 points. Bryan Brodziski added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Mason Froeba led Loyal with 11 points.

The Rockets wrap up Cloverbelt East play next week with a game at Colby on Tuesday and at home against third-place Neillsville next Friday.
