Spencer softball rolls to win over Nekoosa in season opener

NEKOOSA – The Spencer softball team opened its season by pounding out 18 hits in a 17-6 nonconference rout of Nekoosa on Tuesday.

Sam Nikolay, Krystal Weier and Dani Johnson each had four hits in the victory for the Rockets.

Spencer led 6-0 after 1½ innings before the Papermakers rallied to make it an 8-5 game after three. The Rockets added nine more runs in the final two innings to cruise to the win.

Weier had two doubles, a triple and three RBIs, and Dani Johnson, Paige Johnson and Marisa Johnson chipped in with two RBIs each for Spencer.

Heidi Guenther earned the win for Spencer, giving up six runs (two earned) in four innings. She struck out four and walked one. Tyane Phillips threw the final three innings and allowed no runs or hits to earn the save.

“We played a pretty good game against a good team,” Spencer coach Jason Gorst said. “We have some things to clean up, but we hit the ball very hard.”

Spencer hosts Gilman in its home and Cloverbelt Conference East opener on Thursday.
