WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield softball team smashed out 12 hits but couldn’t score enough runs in a 5-4 loss to Wisconsin Rapids in the teams’ Wisconsin Valley Conference opener on Tuesday at Lincoln High School.

The Tigers trailed 5-1 before scoring three times in the fourth to cut Rapids’ lead to one. However, Marshfield couldn’t manage another run against Wisconsin Rapids pitcher Ashly Freund over the final three innings.

Vikki Getsinger hit a two-run homer in the second inning and added an RBI single in the third to help the Raiders to the lead.

The Tigers had the tying run on third base with one out in the sixth and again with no outs in the seventh, but couldn’t muster another tally.

“Offensively we hit the ball a lot better, swung the bat a lot better, than in the first game against Tomah,” Marshfield coach Mike Voss said. “Our pitching, for the most part, was good. We just had the two bad innings (the second and third where Rapids scored all five of its runs). As a young team, we still have things to work on in practice and hope to get better at as the season goes along.”

Brianna Breu, Miranda Baierl and Taylor Hasz each had two hits for Marshfield (0-2, 0-1 Wisconsin Valley).

The Tigers play at Merrill on Friday.
