MARSHFIELD – Stevens Point scored a pair of goals in the final 22 minutes to edge Marshfield 3-1 in a critical Wisconsin Valley Conference girls soccer matchup Thursday at Griese Park.

The win allows Point to remain undefeated at 10-0-1 and 6-0 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, while severely hampering Marshfield’s chances at a top spot in the conference. The Tigers fall to 5-3-1 and 2-3 in the Valley, and are now two games out of second place.

Laura Yonke scored on a penalty at the 28:28 mark to give SPASH a 1-0 lead and the score remained that way until the Tigers struck early in the second half.

Darian Molter scored on an assist from Mardie Shanahan 6:42 into the second half to tie the game, but that was all the Tigers could muster.

Danielle Thomason scored at the 58:01 mark and Jen Hoerter added another goal with 4:41 remaining for the Panthers.

“We played a nice game, but there were some good scoring opportunities that we had just miss the mark,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “We still have lots of confidence and believe each game will be won by us. I like that our team is always playing with confidence until the last whistle. We are never hanging our heads, and play at a high level.

“We switched our defense up a little tonight and the team responded pretty well. We tried to take Points top scorers out of the game by putting Maddie Smith and Megan Marotz on the first and third leading scorers in the conference. They did a great job overall, and the task can be very tiring, but for the most part we shut down a very dynamic scoring duo.”

Marshfield plays a nonconference game at home against Chippewa Falls at 5 p.m. Friday at Griese Park. The Tigers are hosting a fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, with raffles and silent auction items available.
