STEVENS POINT – Marshfield took advantage of two mistakes by Stevens Point and Matt McCann nailed a game-winning goal with 4:21 to go to lift the Tigers to a 3-2 win on Tuesday night in a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys soccer game.

Marshfield tied the game 1-1 in the first half when SPASH had an “own goal” and took the lead on a penalty kick by Austin Gilbert following a foul on the Panthers at the 50-minute mark.

After SPASH tied the game 4 minutes later on Chia Yung’s second goal of the game, McCann knocked in the game-winner to give the Tigers their second win in the conference and third of the season (3-7-1 overall, 2-3-1 in the WVC).

Marshfield coach Ron Todryk said McCann dribbled through and dodged numerous SPASH defenders while going down the left sideline, then crossing into the middle and sneaking a shot past Panthers’ goalkeeper Joel Murillo into the lower left corner of the goal.

Todryk said it was the Tigers first win over Stevens Point since 2008.

Trenton Todryk had seven saves in goal for Marshfield.

“SPASH is a solid team, a great pssing team, and even though they made some mistakes on the own goal and the PK, we still have a good feeling coming out of there playing a quality team and coming out with a victory,” Ron Todryk said. “Everybody played their position very well. We tightened up the defense and kept their opportunities for one-on-one against our goalie down. Bobby Leggon has played fantastic at the sweeper.”

Marshfield plays at Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
