Tigers’ Sparbel named GNC coach of year

Marshfield coach Nate Sparbel was named the Great Northern Conference girls hockey coach of the year as the all-conference team was announced Thursday.

Sparbel led the Tigers to a 12-8-1 record overall and a 6-5 record and a fourth-place finish in the Great Northern Conference.

Marshfield freshman Paige Johnson was named to the all-conference second team and junior Chandler Roy-Peterson and sophomore Nicole Karl were honorable mention picks for the Tigers.

Marshfield, in just its second season in WIAA competition, reached the sectional semifinal before losing to Central Wisconsin Storm 3-0 on Tuesday.

Storm goalie Hillary Drake was named the Great Northern Player of the year.
