Spencer volleyball rolls to championship at Abbotsford’s Bud Nelson Invitational

ABBOTSFORD – The Spencer volleyball team continued its hot streak with a perfect 7-0 record and the championship of the Bud Nelson Invitational on Saturday at Abbotsford High School.

The Rockets swept matches with Stratford, Abbotsford, Loyal/Granton, Wisconsin Valley Lutheran, Waupaca and Pittsville, and won a 2-1 match over Colby.

“7-0 is great day at any tourney,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “Paige Johnson was playing hockey for Team Wisconsin this weekend so we had to work through some new lineups and the girls were extremely successful with new things. We had a lot of girls step up today…it was a total team effort.”

Stratford finished 2-5 and placed sixth out of the eight teams.

Tara Matter had 57 kills, 10 aces and four blocks for Spencer.

Macie Weber added 29 kills and seven blocks, Tynae Phillips had 28 kills and a team-high nine blocks, and setter Brooke Kettleborough was spot on all day with 121 assists.

Alicia Endreas had a team-high 14 aces and 53 digs, and Marisa Johnson added 33 digs and nine aces for Spencer.

Spencer plays at Gilman and Stratford is at Wausau Newman Catholic on Tuesday.
