AUBURNDALE – In a match to decide the Marawood Conference South Division volleyball title, it was no wonder Auburndale and Marathon needed five games, and an extra few points, to decide the winner.

The Apaches rallied from a 2-1 deficit to knock off Marathon 25-20, 10-25, 16-25, 26-24, 16-14, to win a thrilling five-game match on Tuesday night at Auburndale High School.

Auburndale, which won seven South titles from 2004-10, had it streak stopped by Marathon last year, but enacted revenge by claiming its 10th conference title in school history.

Nicole Nikolay had a team-high 13 kills and added 18 digs for Auburndale. Jenna Peplinski led the Apaches with 17 assists, Kendra Kundinger added six kills and 25 digs, and Camille Swart and Shannon Yahke also had six kills each.

The match was Auburndale’s conference-finale, while Marathon has a match at home against Wisconsin Rapids Assumption next Tuesday. Auburndale wraps up its regular-season schedule with a tournament at Tomahawk on Saturday and a nonconference dual match at Athens on Oct. 11.
