RIB MOUNTAIN – Auburndale junior Luke Haas and Spencer sophomore Donovan Fox qualified for next week’s state meet after finishing in the top 10 at the WIAA Division 3 Cross Country Sectional at Nine-Mile Forest on Friday.
The top two teams and the top five individuals not on those teams qualify for the WIAA State Cross Country Championships, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.
Haas finished fifth in the boys race in 17:33.3 and Fox was 10th in 17:54.3 to grab two of those five individual spots.
Marathon won the boys team title behind winner Andrew Studinski (16:47.2) and runner-up Steven Studinski (17:00.0).
Rosholt grabbed the other team spot, finishing just one point behind Marathon. Auburndale was a distant third, with Marshfield Columbus Catholic fourth, Stratford sixth and Spencer 12th.
Jeremy Binder was Columbus’ top finisher, taking 21st in 18:24.0, while Stratford was led by Phil Sersch, who finished 15th in 18:11.2.
No area girls qualified for the state meet.
Laona/Wabeno won the team title, with Edgar finishing second.
Natalie Miller of Three Lakes won the individual girls race and took one of the five individual spots at the state meet, finishing in 15:18.3 and winning by 20 seconds over runner-up Jessi Krause of Edgar.
Emma Steines led area runners, taking 12th for Auburndale in 16:48.3. The Apaches finished seventh.
Johnelle Miner was 15th to lead Stratford. The freshman ran in 16:54.5 as the Tigers took fifth.
Spencer was ninth in the team standings, with Samantha Fuehrer leading the Rockets by finishing 36th in 18:02.4.
Columbus Catholic only had four runners and didn’t figure in the team standings. Rachel Roehl was 38th in 18:03.8 and Alexandria Viegut was right behind in 39th in 18:05.2 for the Dons.
