Marathon uses dominating third quarter to sneak past Stratford girls basketball

STRATFORD – Marathon exploded for a 16-2 run in the third quarter and held off Stratford 38-33 in the teams’ Marawood Conference South Division girls basketball opener Tuesday night at Stratford High School.

The Tigers, playing their season opener as well, led 20-9 at halftime before Marathon (2-0 overall) rolled to the big third quarter and cruised to the victory.

Natasha Hinke scored 12 points to lead Marathon.

Hannah Schmitt scored 16 points, which included 6 of 7 from the free-throw line, and grabbed nine rebounds, and Brooke Schultze had 10 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals for Stratford.

Stratford is back in action Thursday with a nonconference game at Chequamegon.
