Auburndale girls basketball edges Edgar in Marawood South opener

AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale girls basketball team overcame an early deficit to beat Edgar 39-34 in the Marawood Conference South Division opener for both teams on Tuesday night at Auburndale High School.

Edgar led 14-8 after the first quarter only to see the Apaches turn the tables with a big second quarter as they took a 23-22 lead into halftime.

Auburndale outscored Edgar by two points in each of the final two quarters to hold on for the win and improve to 2-0 overall. This is was the season opener for Edgar.

Auburndale was just 12 of 33 shooting, but made 14 of 24 free throws and held a 29-18 rebounding edge over Edgar. The Wildcats were only 11 of 44 shooting.

Nicole Nikolay and Shannon Yonke each had seven points and Stefani Karl had six to lead a balanced attack for Auburndale. Seven Apaches scored at least four points in the win.

Holly Denfeld had eight points to lead the Wildcats.

Auburndale is now off until Dec. 6 when it hosts Wausau Newman Catholic.
