MERRILL – The Marshfield girls soccer team grabbed its first Wisconsin Valley Conference victory of the season, rolling to a 10-0 win over Merrill on Monday.

Darian Molter scored three times and Julia Urban and Emily Goeppinger each scored twice for the Tigers, who improve to 2-3-1 and 1-2-1 in the WVC.

Marshfield got the scoring going with an own goal by Merrill at the 11:49 mark of the first half. Before the half ended, Goeppinger scored on an assist from Urban, Molter scored twice and Maddie Smith added a goal to put Marshfield up 5-0. The goal was Smith’s first of the season and she added an assist in the second half.

Goeppinger, Molter and Alison Gruen scored in the first 16 minutes of the second half, and Urban tallied her two goals in the final 7:07 to provide the final margin.

Walker Guzowski had three assists and Urban added two for the Tigers.

“We got contributions from many different players and we need this to compete as the teams are putting a concentrated effort to stop Molter and Gruen so far this year,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “It was nice to see some others step up and put the ball in the net.”

Courtney Thumann had three saves, earning a shutout win in her second career start in goal for the Tigers.

“Macie Staab and Janelle Skaden are becoming steady performers on defense to pair up with Megan Marotz and Walker Guzowski,” Lindner said. “We slid Patty Bloczynski to defense tonight and she stepped in and did a real nice job for us with her minutes on defense as well.”

Marshfield hosts Wausau West on Tuesday and Wausau East on Thursday in its first two home games of the season at Griese Park.
