MARSHFIELD – Molly Field scored with less than 2 minutes left in the second overtime to lift the Marshfield girls soccer team to its second straight Wisconsin Valley Conference victory as the Tigers defeated Wausau West 2-1 on Tuesday at Griese Park.

Field nailed her first varsity goal on a cross pass from Emily Goeppinger with 1:33 left in the second overtime to give the Tigers the win. Marshfield crawls back to the .500 mark on the season, moving to 3-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the WVC. West falls to 1-3 overall and in the conference.

Marshfield took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Alison Gruen 7:34 into the game.

The score remained that way for the next 68 minutes before West’s Anna Brown scored on an assist from Alex Guenther with just 4:09 left in regulation to force overtime.

Marshfield outshot West 30-12, but West goalie Haley Fochs had 15 saves to keep the Warriors in the game.

“We had the shots but many were right at the goalie as she played the angles very well in the game,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “We have been talking about the younger players stepping up recently and they have this week in both victories. Molly getting this goal will hopefully boost her confidence and continue to get her into position to have positive things happen on each touch of the ball.”

Courtney Thumann only had to make four saves in goal for Marshfield as the team’s defense stepped up again.

“The defense is young, but they have really stepped up with all the injuries,” Lindner said. “There are not a lot of substitutes and Janelle Skaden, Macie Staab, and Patty Bloczynski have taken the lead from the upperclassmen on defense – Megan Marotz and Walker Guzorski.”

Marshfield hosts Wausau East at 5 p.m. Thursday at Griese Park.
