AUBURNDALE – Kelly Tomfohrde scored 14 points and Liz Breu added 12 points and nine rebounds to lead the Auburndale girls basketball team to a 42-27 win over Marathon in a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal Thursday at Auburndale High School.

Auburndale (18-6) won for the 14th time in its last 16 games and will face Amherst (17-7) in a regional final at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wausau West High School. Amherst, which has reached the state tournament four straight years and won the Division 3 championship last season, beat Edgar 63-52 on Thursday to advance.

The Apaches opened up a tight game with a 14-5 run in the second quarter and led 24-15 at the break.

Auburndale led 36-25 after three quarters, but missed four of eight free throws in the fourth quarter. However, Marathon made just one basket in the fourth quarter and couldn’t get any closer.

Breu has the Apaches’ only basket in the fourth and made both of her free-throw attempts to help top-seeded Auburndale finish the season 12-2 at home.
