Marshfield boys second, girls fourth at WIAA Division 1 track and field regional at D.C. Everest

WESTON – Marshfield’s Keiron Howlett and Matt Oestreich each qualified for sectionals in three individual events as the Tigers boys placed second at the WIAA Division 1 Track & Field Regional on Monday at D.C. Everest High School.

The Marshfield boys finished with 126.5 points, placing behind champion Stevens Point’s 183.

The Marshfield girls were fourth with 87.5 points. Wausau West won the girls regional title with 159 points.

Howlett won the long jump (21 feet, 11 inches) and the triple jump (43-4), was second in the 200 meters (22.55 seconds) and was part of the 400 relay team along with Riley Gebelein, Olin Boson and Ryan Trierweiler that placed third (44.00) to qualify for Thursday’s sectional meet at Rice Lake.

The top four finishers in each event move on to the sectional, with the top three at the sectional qualifying for the 2013 WIAA State Track & Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on May 31-June 1.

Oestreich placed second in the triple jump (43-2.5) and the long jump (21-6.25) behind Howlett, and also was third in the high jump (6-0).

Also qualifying for sectionals for the Marshfield boys were Nolan Redetzke, who won the 3,200 regional title in 10:06.95; Jacob Bauer (fourth in high jump, 5-10); Gebelein in the 100 (third, 11.54); Ryan Hayes in the 1,600 (third, 4:43.80); and Brad Krueger in the pole vault (13-3).

The Marshfield girls did not have any regional champions, but had a pair of runner-up finishes from Martha Kupfer. She was second in the triple jump (34-7.5) and the 200 (26.47), and teamed with Ashleigh Sternitzky, Sara Fuller and Nikki Youngblood to take third in the 800 relay in 1:49.76.

Marshfield also had two other girls relays qualify for sectionals. Rebecca Voss, Ellie Kummer, Melissa Brix and Courtney Brown were fourth in the 3,200 relay in 10:13.47 and the 1,600 relay team of Fulller, Brown, Kummer and Gabby Stauber was third in 4:16.94.

Melissa May took third in the shot put (36-4), Yasmeena Ougayour was third in the discus (111-11) and Maria Brix finished fourth in the pole vault (9-3) to also move on for the Tigers girls.
