Howlett, Oestreich qualify for state in six events at WIAA Division 1 track and field sectional at Rice Lake

RICE LAKE – Keiron Howlett and Matt Oestreich each qualified for state in three individual events by placing in the top three at the WIAA Division 1 track and field sectional at Rice Lake High School on Thursday.

Marshfield had four other individual qualifiers and a relay that will complete in the 2013 WIAA State Track and Field Championships on May 31-June 1 at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Howlett won the long jump (22 feet, 8½ inches) and the triple jump (44-8¼), and placed third in the 200 meters (22.66 seconds), while Oestreich was second in the triple jump (44-7½), third in the long jump (21-8) and third in the high jump (6-1).

Also qualifying for state for the Marshfield boys was Nolan Redetzke, who took third in the 3,200 (9:44.5) and the 400 relay team of Riley Gebelein, Olin Boson, Howlett and Ryan Trierweiler, which finished second in 43.81.

The Marshfield girls had two individual state qualifiers. Martha Kupfer took second in the 200 (25.91) and Yasmeena Ougayour finished third in the discus (109-8).

The girls had three relay teams placed fifth. The 3,200 team of Rebecca Voss, Ellie Kummer, Melissa Brix and Courtney Brown was fifth in 10:16.25; the 800 relay team of Ashleigh Sternitzky, Sara Fuller, Nikki Youngblood and Kupfer finished in 1:49.39; and the 1,600 team of Fuller, Kummer, Brown and Gabby Stauber ended up fifth in 4:12.75.

Melissa May finished fourth in the shot put with a toss of 38-4¼ and was added as an extra qualifier to the state meet field on Friday.

Also competing for the Marshfield girls at the sectional was Maria Brix, who was eighth in pole vault (8-6).

Ryan Hayes and Brad Krueger just missed out on state berths for the Tigers, taking fourth in their events. Hayes was fourth in the 1,600 (4:33.54) and Krueger tied for second in the pole vault with a vault of 13-0, but ended up fourth in the standings based on number of attempts.

Jacob Bauer finished fifth in the high jump (6-0) and Riley Gebelein was seventh in 100 (11.49) for Marshfield.
