STEVENS POINT – The Marshfield girls soccer team’s season came to an end Saturday with a 3-1 loss to Stevens Point Area Senior High in a WIAA Division 1 regional final.

SPASH beat the Tigers for the third time this season. All three games ended in a 3-1 score.

The Panthers (14-1-1) move on to the sectional semifinals at Eau Claire Memorial on Thursday. Marshfield ends its season with a 11-7-1 record.

Following a scoreless first half, SPASH’s Jen Hoerter scored on a penalty kick just 12 seconds into the second half to put the Panthers on top.

Just 4 minutes later, an inadvertent handball by Marshfield led to another penalty kick and this time Abby Bohanski scored to make it 2-0 SPASH.

The Tigers fought back and cut the deficit in half when Alison Gruen scored off a crossing passing from Emily Goeppinger at the 61:36 mark. However, Marshfield couldn’t muster another goal.

Hoerter added the final tally for SPASH with 10:46 remaining.

“We had Julia Urban and Maddie Smith marking on the explosive SPASH players – Hoerter and Bohanski – and they did an outstanding job,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “Those two players are extremely talented and to keep them down an entire game is so difficult.”

Gruen’s goal gave her 97 points for her Tigers’ career (43 goals, 11 assists), ranking third all-time in the program’s history.

Seniors Megan Marotz, Courtney Thumann, Smith, Jessica Ramirez, Lindsey Liebrick, Amanda Brickley and Gruen played in their final game for Marshfield.

“These ladies have contributed to some great success over the past three years to the tune of a 38-22-2 record after a freshman year going 3-19-2,” Lindner said. “The program has produced two regional championships and two third-place finishes in the Wisconsin Valley Conference after going winless as freshmen in the WVC.”
