APPLETON – The 2013 WIAA State Spring Baseball Tournament began Tuesday, June 11, and continues through Thursday, June 13, at Fox Cities Stadium.
Division 1 quarterfinals and semifinals were held Tuesday. Play continues in the other three divisions Wednesday and championship games in four divisions are scheduled for June 13.
Greenwood won the Division 4 title on Thursday, edging Lake Country Lutheran of Hartland 6-4. It is Greenwood’s first state title since 1990 in its fifth state appearance overall. Last season the Indians, runner-up of the Cloverbelt Conference East Division, reached the state tournament for the first time since winning that title in 1990, but lost in the Division 4 semifinals. Greenwood also won the Class C title in 1988.
Oconto got past Westby 4-3 to take the Division 3 championship. It is Oconto’s first state baseball title in its fourth appearance (1952, 1995, 2003).
Lodi won the Division 2 championship, beating Green Bay Notre Dame 6-2. It is the first state title for Lodi, which was making just its second state appearance. Lodi lost in the Class B title game in 1982.
Sun Prairie captured the Division 1 title with a thrilling 5-4 win over Stevens Point Area Senior High in 8 innings.
SPASH trailed 4-2 with no one on and two outs in the bottom of the seventh before rallying to tie the game. Sun Prairie responded with a run in the top of the eighth and held the Panthers scoreless in the bottom to claim the title, its second straight state championship and seventh in school history.
