Marshfield Junior Legion baseball team sweeps Wisconsin Rapids

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Junior Legion continued its strong second-half push with a doubleheader sweep of Wisconsin Rapids on Friday night at Jack Hackman Field.

The Blue Demons won 5-1 and 7-6 to improve to 8-1 in their last nine games, 17-10-1 overall and 12-5 in the Wisconsin Valley Legion League.

Jeremy Binder earned the win with a complete-game effort in the opener. The run he allowed was unearned and he struck out two. Jeremy Brost, Jack Donahue and Trevor Schwecke each had RBI singles for Marshfield.

Donahue had a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete the sweep for the Blue Demons. Schwecke tied the game earlier in the inning with an RBI double and scored the winning run.

Mitch Susa earned the victory, throwing 4 2/3 innings of relief. Donahue had three hits and Matt Kuhlka and Schwecke each had two for Marshfield.

Marshfield’s scheduled game against Chippewa Falls on Saturday was cancelled. The Blue Demons return to action Sunday with a make-up game at D.C. Everest High School against RSW at 5:30 p.m. Marshfield wraps up its regular-season schedule with a doubleheader Monday against Pittsville at Hackman Field.

The Junior Legion Regional will be held at Jack Hackman Field starting on Thursday. Plover plays Black River Falls at 3 p.m., with Stevens Point taking on Marshfield at 5:30 p.m. RSW received a first-round bye.

The double-elimination regional tournament continues through Saturday or Sunday, depending on who survives.
