SPENCER – Spencer volleyball player Marisa Johnson was chosen by the voters as the winner of the WDLB-WOSQ Radio/MarshfieldAreaSports.com September High School Athlete of the Month.

The award, which will be voted on and given out monthly throughout the 2013-14 school year, is also sponsored by Marshfield Clinic and Burt Trophy & Awards.

Johnson, a junior all-around player for the Rockets, had 51 kills and 77 digs as Spencer went 7-0 and won the Bud Nelson Invitational at Abbotsford on Sept. 28. She also had 53 kills and five service aces as the Rockets took second at the Auburndale Invite on Sept. 14. In five Cloverbelt Conference East Division matches in the month (all wins by the Rockets), Johnson had 72 kills and 94 digs.

A total of 3,931 votes were cast between Oct. 1-7, with Johnson accumulating 1,830. Lexi Belter, a volleyball player at Athens, was second with 1,230 votes.

Other nominees were Nathan Dupae, Pittsville football; Albert Goerlitz, Owen-Withee football; Keiron Howlett, Marshfield football; Sean McCarthy, Columbus Catholic soccer; Johnelle Miner, Stratford cross country; and Andrew Studinski, Marathon cross country.

Varsity athletes from the following high schools are eligible to be nominated for the award, which will be given out monthly from September 2013 through May 2014: Abbotsford, Athens, Auburndale, Colby, Columbus Catholic, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Marathon, Marshfield, Neillsville, Owen-Withee, Pittsville, Spencer, Stratford and Thorp.

An Athlete of the Year award will be given in late June 2014 and will be selected by MarshfieldAreaSports.com and WDLB-WOSQ Radio staff.
