Columbus Catholic boys grab state berth by taking 2nd at WIAA Division 3 cross country sectional at Athens

ATHENS – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic boys cross country team was fourth at the Cloverbelt Conference Meet last week. On Saturday, the Dons finished second among 17 complete teams at the WIAA Division 3 Sectional Cross Country Meet at Erbach Park to grab a berth in the state meet.

The Dons finished with 91 points, a hefty 51 points ahead of third-place Phillips, to secure the second of two team qualifying spots at state. The 2013 WIAA State Cross Country Meet is next Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.

Marathon won the boys sectional title and the other spot at state with just 30 points as its top four runners finished in the top 10 overall. Andrew Studinski won the meet in 16:42.3 and Steven Studinski was second, 16 seconds behind.

Sam Stundinger finshed 14th (18:11), Jeremy Binder was 16th (18:11), Evan Nikolai took 17th (18:16) and Ben Behling was 23rd (18:30) to provide a strong grouping for the Dons.

Stratford took sixth and had one of the five individual state qualifiers in Phil Sersch. Sersch finished fourth in 17:30.5, less than 2 seconds behind Jim Liebe of Rosholt.

Auburndale ended up ninth and Spencer was 16th in the boys standings.

Jake Hunsberger topped Auburndale, finishing 29th in 18:49.

Donovan Fox was Spencer’s top runner, taking 18th in 18:19, 45 seconds off the final individual qualifying spot.

Auburndale’s Abby Bauer was the lone local qualifier as she finished sixth in the girls race in 16:15.7.

Phillips won the team title with 80 points and Stevens Point Pacellii took the other team qualifying spot with 88 points.

Natalie Miller of Three Lakes set the winning pace in the girls race, finishing in 15:28.3, 47 seconds ahead of Bauer.

Stratford was seventh, Auburndale ninth and Spencer 10th in the girls standings. Columbus Catholic only had three runners and didn’t qualify for a team score.

Nadia King was 15th (17:06) to top Stratford; Paige Lawrence was Spencer’s best runner, taking 31st (17:58); and Rachel Roehl took 40th (18:21.6) for the Dons.
