Auburndale volleyball upsets top-seed Athens to win WIAA Division 3 regional title

ATHENS – Auburndale pulled off its second-straight, five-set upset in the 2013 WIAA girls volleyball playoffs, shocking No. 1 Athens on its home court, winning 3-2 on Saturday night at Athens High School.

Auburndale won 25-9, 17-25, 20-25, 25-21, 16-14, to advance to Thursday’s WIAA Division 3 sectional semifinal against Stanley-Boyd at Abbotsford. S-B, the No. 3 seed, upended No. 2 Marathon on the road 3-1 on Saturday.

Auburndale, the fifth seed in the regional, knocked off No. 4 Spencer at Spencer on Thursday.

The Apaches’ front row duo of Shannon Yahnke and Camille Swart pounded out 28 combined kills. Yahnke had 16, Swart added 12, and Taylor Gotz and Ashley Breu each chipped in with seven.

Kendra Kundinger had 28 assists and 12 digs, Hannah Castellano had 30 digs, and Jenna Peplinski added 14 assists for Auburndale.
