Shooting woes plague Spencer girls basketball in loss to Gilman

SPENCER – Spencer shot only 24 percent from the field and made just 7 of 18 free throws, losing at home to previously winless Gilman 36-23 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division girls basketball game Friday night at Spencer High School.

The Rockets (2-4, 1-4 Cloverbelt East) were just 8 of 33 from the field and 0-for-8 from 3-point range in the loss. They scored no more than nine points in any quarter.

Gilman was solid from the field (16 of 34) and survived despite making only 2 of 13 free throws.

Gilman led 17-10 at halftime before a 13-9 third quarter pushed the lead to double digits.

Each team was plagued by turnovers. Spencer committed 27, while the Pirates (1-6, 1-5 Cloverbelt East) turned it over 22 times.

Macie Weber had seven points to top Spencer.

The Rockets return to action Tuesday at home against Augusta.
