WAUSAU – The Marshfield wrestling team sent nine athletes to the WIAA Division 1 individual sectional at Wausau West on Saturday, but none of them survived as the Tigers will not send anyone to next week’s state meet.
Mitch Hertel took third at 152 pounds, Josh Lang was third at 160, Tristan Wilson took fourth at 285 for Marshfield’s only top-four finishes.
The top two in each weight class qualify for the 2014 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament on Feb. 27-March 1 at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Hertel, the regional champion and a two-time state tournament qualifier, lost a semifinal match to Darius Wright of River Falls 7-3. Hertel went on to win the third-place match, beating John Keifer of New Richmond 10-5, but did not get a chance at a second-place wrestleback as Wright lost in the championship game to Mason Stokke of Menomonie. Hertel finishes the season with a 38-4 record.
Lang (23-21) lost a semifinal match to eventual 160-pound champion Travis Hettinga of Wausau West 17-1 before coming back to win the third-place match against Winston Bystrom of River Falls, 7-3. Lang was pinned in a second-place wrestleback to Mason Reinhardt of Merrill in 1:09.
Anthony Kanable (120 pounds), Anthony Christmas (113), Devon Klement (132), Noah Gerdes (106), Nick Humphrey (220) and Luke Mahoney (126) also competed for the Tigers at the sectional, but did not reach the semifinals and were eliminated.
