Auburndale girls basketball team wins WIAA Division 4 regional final at Marathon

MARATHON – The Auburndale girls basketball team is regional champions after pulling off a 61-50 upset win over Marathon in a WIAA Division 4 regional final Saturday night at Marathon High School.

Auburndale (16-9) moves on to a Division 4 sectional semifinal against Bonduel (20-4) on Thursday at Wausau West High School. The winner will play either Amherst (20-4) or Algoma (22-2) in a sectional final on March 15 at Waupaca.

The Apaches, the fifth seed in the sectional bracket, defeated No. 1 seed Marathon for the second time this season. Marathon finishes with a 21-3 record.

Auburndale trailed 22-19 at halftime before exploding for a 23-10 run in the third quarter and scoring 43 points total in the second half.

Sophomore Paiton Richardson and junior Cheyenne Karl each had 13 points to lead the way for the Apaches.
