EAU CLAIRE – Marshfield senior Josh Berres lost a playoff for the third and final state individual qualifying spot at the WIAA Division 1 boys golf sectional on Tuesday at Wild Ridge Golf Course.
Berres finished in a four-way tie for eighth place after shooting a six-over par 78. He then dropped a playoff with River Falls senior Garrett Loomis for the final individual berth in the state tournament. Loomis, a Marquette University recruit, birdied the third hole of the playoff.
Eau Claire Memorial had a team total of 293 to easily win the sectional team title and will be joined by second-place finisher Eau Claire North (316) at the 2014 WIAA State Boys Golf Championships at University Ridge Golf Course in Verona next Monday and Tuesday.
Pat Fisher of Hudson (75), Matt Tuman of Wausau East (77) and Loomis earned the three individual spots. The top three individuals not on the top two teams earn a spot at the state meet.
Marshfield finished sixth among the eight teams at the sectional with a score of 336. Ian Pillai tied for 16th with an 81, Kyle Hoffman tied for 19th with an 82, Derek Michalski tied for 44th with a 95, and Craig Serchen was 46th with a 100 for the Tigers.
“Josh played a great round of golf, he just couldn’t get a birdie putt to fall,” Marshfield coach Paul Foegen said. “He had birdie putts of 15 feet or less on the last three holes of regulation and on two of the three playoff holes.”
