Marshfield girls soccer shut out in WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinal at Rhinelander

RHINELANDER – The Marshfield girls soccer team fell 7-0 to Rhinelander in a WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinal Thursday at Rhinelander High School.

The Tigers end the season with a 9-9-3 record.

Rhinelander (17-2-1) advances to a sectional final Saturday against River Falls at Wausau East. The winner moves on to next week’s 2014 WIAA State Girls Soccer Tournament in Milwaukee on June19-21.

Freshman Sydney Zettler scored four times and senior Liz Krug had the other three goals for the Hodags.

Rhinelander scored three goals in the first 12 minutes to take control.

Emily Critelli had seven saves and Andrea Carolfi had three in goal for Marshfield.

Five seniors ended their careers for the Tigers – Darian Molter, Walker Guzowski, Emily Goeppinger, Michelle Aspeslet and Kailey Pritzl.

Molter and Guzowski were both first-team all-Wisconsin Valley Conference selections this season and Molter finshed here stellar career with 120 goals and 21 assists, both program records. Her 35 goals this year also set a new mark for Marshfield.

“We had a nice season winning regionals for the third time in four years,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “The coaching staff is very proud of the entire team and with nine newcomers to varsity who contributed this year we will be fine the next few years. We know what it takes to move up and compete with the top teams and that dedication will tell a story going into next season.”
