MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield girls soccer team hung close with defending Wisconsin Valley Conference champion Wausau East, but gave up two second-half goals and fell 4-1 in a Valley game Tuesday at Griese Park.

Trailing 2-0, Katie Marotz scored on a pass from Kallie Mayer to bring the Tigers to within a goal at halftime.

East (2-0-1 WVC) finished strong with two goals in the second half, and held the Tigers scoreless, to stay unbeaten in league play.

“Overall, it was a very well played game by Marshfield as we hustled and
were competing for any loose balls, and winning the battle many times,” Marshfield assistant coach Steve Lindner said.

Abigail Brock and Leah Cherney returned from injuries for the Tigers, helping replenish some depth that had been lacking over the early part of the season.

Marshfield’s Kassi Todryk had nine saves and East’s Katie Gajewski had four in goal for their respective teams.

Marshfield (2-6-1) hosts Rhinelander at 5 p.m. Thursday at Griese Park.
