Columbus baseball wins first game of season

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic baseball team scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to win its first game of the season, 4-3 over Owen-Withee on Monday at Jack Hackman Field.

The Dons trailed 3-0 after two innings but pitcher David Green held the Blackhawks (1-10, 0-7 Cloverbelt East) scoreless the rest of the way and the offense did enough at the end to get the win.

Green struck out 11 and walked eight, allowing just five hits.

Derek Wegerer struck out 13 and walked four, giving up five hits and all four runs – three of which were earned.

Mike Iwanski was 2-for-4 and Charlie Mayeux was 2-for-3 with a double for Columbus (1-5 overall and Clvoerbelt East).

“We struggled early but we battled until the end,” Columbus coach Joe Seitz said. “I am very proud of our total team effort.”

The Dons play at Loyal on Tuesday.
