Assumption sweeps two from Columbus baseball

MARSHFIELD – Marshfield Columbus Catholic scored two runs in a seventh-inning rally but came up short, losing to Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 9-7 in the first game of a nonconference baseball doubleheader Saturday at Jack Hackman Field.

Assumption rolled in the second game, knocking off Columbus 18-5.

David Green, Mike Iwanski and Brandon Nikolai each had two hits for the Dons, who had 10 in all in the opener.

Alex Larson took the loss, walking six and and allowing eight runs (seven earned) and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Joe Ashbeck struck out six to earn the win for Assumption in Game 1.

In the second game, Assumption (6-7) scored multiple runs in every inning, including six in the second and five in the fifth, and pounded out 15 hits in the victory.

Green was 3-for-3 and Logan Reigel was 2-2 for the Dons (1-8).
