MARSHFIELD – Marshfield’s Taylor Varsho had a two-run double and Raelyn Wingert had another RBI double in the first inning to give pitcher Rhiannon Baierl more than enough as the Tigers beat Wausau East 10-0 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference softball game Thursday at the Central Wisconsin Fairgrounds.

Taylor Varsho finished 2-for-3 with a total of three RBIs and Wingert added a single and another RBI for Marshfield, which won its third straight game this week to stay in the race for second place in the Valley at 7-4 (13-8 overall). East falls to 1-15, 1-7 in the Valley.

Baierl allowed only one hit, that coming in the fifth inning. She finished with seven strikeouts and two walks in tossing her second shutout of the season against the Lumberjacks.

“She’s (Baierl) been kind of sick all week, and to pitch as well as she did in two of those games – I’m just give her a lot of credit for that,” Marshfield coach Mike Voss said. “We had some nice plays behind her again. Offensively, it was tough to get into a rhythm because we were walking so much (12 walks). We were patient for the most part, and when we did get the opportunities, we made some good contact.”

Marshfield is off for a week before wrapping up its regular-season and Wisconsin Valley schedules at home against Wisconsin Rapids next Thursday. The Tigers open WIAA Division 1 regional action on June 1.
