Marshfield golfers third at WIAA regional

SCHOFIELD – Marshfield senior Mike Field followed up his strong performance at the final leg of the Wisconsin Valley Conference tournament with a 77 and teammate Michael Josephson fired an 81 to lead the Tigers boys golf team to a third-place finish at the WIAA Division 1 boys golf regional Monday at Wausau Country Club.

Field, who shot a career-best 74 at RiverEdge Golf Course in Marshfield last Friday, had a 40 on the front nine and a 37 on the back to finish with a five-over par 77 to finish tied for fourth overall.

Wausau West won the team title with a 315, with Wausau East second at 323, Marshfield third with a season-best 326 and Antigo fourth with a 334. The top four teams and the top four individuals not on those teams advance to the Division 1 sectional on Tuesday, June 1 at RiverEdge.

Pat Hayes shot an 84 and Brandon Brown had an 89 to round out Marshfield’s scoring.

Wausau East’s Alex Schremp was meet medalist, shooting a 74, one shot better than teammate Daniel Spear and Wausau West’s Josh Sturm. Field tied West’s Jim Schroeter for fourth.

D.C. Everest’s Larry Wetzel (80), Merrill’s Dan Hoffmann (81), and Rhinelander’s Josh Willis (82) and Tyde Terzinski (84) wrapped up the four additional individual spots at the sectional tournament.

The state meet is June 7-8 at University Ridge Golf Club in Verona.
