Individuals shine for Marshfield at Wisconsin Valley track meet

WAUSAU – Marshfield’s Jeremy Robinson won two events, Arthur Burkart and Ellen Stichert each won one and Kelsey Weigel had four top-five finishes as both the Tigers boys and girls track and field teams placed fourth on Tuesday at the Wisconsin Valley Conference Outdoor Meet at Wausau West High School.

Robinson won the triple jump with a leap of 44 feet, 4½ inches, and took first in the 200 meters with a time of 22.69 seconds for the Tigers boys, who totaled 80 points. Stevens Point won the boys team title with 198 points. Robinson also was part of two relay teams that earned second- and third-place finishes.

Robinson, Riley Gebelein, Logan Schmitz and Todd Vantassal were second in the 800 relay in 1:31.81, just 0.18 seconds behind first-place Stevens Point, and were third in the 400 relay, finishing in 44.47 seconds.

Burkart won the 800 meters for Marshfield in a time of 2:01.63.

Stichert grabbed the lone individual victory for the Marshfield girls, taking first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.08 seconds. She also placed third in the 100 hurdles (16.49) and was part of the 1,600 relay team with Alexa Fritsch, Amanda Cousins and Miranda Snortheim that took third in 4:19.81.

The Marshfield girls finished with 95 points, with Wausau West winning the team title with 173, just 15½ points more than Stevens Point.

Kelsey Weigel earned valuable points for the Marshfield girls, taking second in the discus (117-7), third in the long jump (16-10½), fourth in the 200 meters (27.63) and fifth in the shot put (35-3).

Alissa Rausch of Wausau West set new WVC outdoor meet records in both the discus (130-10) and shot put (44-1 ¾) to help the Warriors to the team title.

Other top-four finishes for the Marshfield boys came from Cale Schliesman, who was third in the discus (136-3) and Dan Stanley, who finished fourth in the 100 (11.57).

The Tigers’ 400 relay team of Bisoma Omoba, Nikki Youngblood, Snortheim and Gabriella Myrie finished second with a time of 51.59, and Fritsch, Youngblood, Myrie and Snortheim took third in the 800 relay (1:50.06).

Omoba took fourth in the 100 in a time of 13.30, and Michelle Theisen had a pair of top-four finishes for Marshfield, taking third in the shot put (36-6½) and fourth in the discus (105-3).

“We asked a lot of these girls and they responded tonight,” Marshfield girls coach Dan Akin said. “We got a lot of PRs (personal records) tonight and I couldn’t be prouder of these fine athletes.

“Our seniors shouldered the load for us and we leaned on them big time.”

Marshfield will be back in Wausau next week for the WIAA Division 1 regionals Monday at Wausau West and for the Division 1 sectionals Thursday, May 27, at Wausau East. The WIAA state meet is at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on June 4-5.
