Marshfield’s Ackerman loses first match at tennis sectional

WAUSAU – Marshfield’s No. 1 singles player Nick Ackerman lost his first match and was ousted from the WIAA Division 1 boys tennis sectional on Wednesday at Wausau West High School.

Freshman Jacob Twardowski lost at No. 3 singles and finishes his season at 11-7. Ackerman wraps up his senior season with a 16-4 record.

Ackerman was defeeated by Hudson’s Max Hawksford 6-4, 6-3, and Twardowski lost to Eau Claire Memorial’s Michael Roden 6-0, 6-2.

The top four at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, and the winners of the No. 2 singles and doubles flights move on to the WIAA State Individual Boys Tennis Tournament at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison on June 3-5.

No. 1 singles qualifiers from the Wausau West sectional are Bryan Miles (19-2) of Wausau East, Christian Phelps (17-7) of Eau Claire Memorial, Chalee Sriprasert (16-8) of Stevens Point and Hawksford (10-10). Matt Delmastro (23-2) of Eau Claire Memorial won the No. 2 singles flight.

No. 1 doubles teams reaching state are Joe Wollum and Ryan VandeLinde (21-3) of Eau Claire Memorial, Evan Verploegh and Matt Lee (16-4) of Wausau East, Skip Turner and Marcus Bachmeier (15-5) of Eau Claire North and Cody Crunkilton and Michael Chang (5-3) of Stevens Point. Erik Olson and Matt Reagan (17-3) of Eau Claire Memorial won at No. 2 doubles.

Eau Claire Memorial won the team standings and will compete in the WIAA State Team Boys Tennis Tournament in Madison on June 11-12.
