Marshfield’s Field qualifies for WIAA state golf meet

MARSHFIELD – Marshfield senior Mike Field shot an even-par 72 to win medalist honors at the WIAA Division 1 boys golf sectional Tuesday at Riveredge Golf Course, qualifying for next week’s WIAA state tournament.

Field birdied the first hole and the par-3 seventh hole, shooting a one-over par 37 on the front nine. He birdied the par-4 12th and overcame a bogey on the par-5 14th with a birdie on the par-3 17th to fire a one-under par 35 on the back nine.

Field joins Jim Schroeter of Wausau West (76) and Jack Holland of Hudson (78) as individual qualifiers for the state meet, which is Monday and Tuesday at University Ridge Golf Course in Verona.

Holland outlasted teammate Luke Burbach and Jake Bourassa of New Richmond in a playoff for the final spot.

Eau Claire Memorial won the team title with a 309 and Superior finished second with a 313 to qualify for state.

Marshfield’s Michael Josephson just missed qualifying for the playoff for the final individual spot, shooting a 79. Marshfield finished sixth out of eight teams with a score of 332. Brandon Brown had an 89 and Pay Hayes shot a 92 for the Tigers.
