Owen-Withee pushes past Spencer boys basketball

SPENCER – The Spencer boys basketball team couldn’t hold on to a slim halftime lead and dropped a Cloverbelt Conference East Division game to Owen-Withee 74-61 on Friday night at Spencer High School.

Owen-Withee trailed by one at halftime before outscoring the Rockets 47-33 in the second half. The Blackhawks made 19 of 32 free throws, eight more makes than Spencer, and outshot the Rockets 7-4 from 3-point range to provide the difference.

Spencer falls to 4-9 overall and 4-6 in the Cloverbelt East. Owen-Withee is now 9-4 and 8-2 in the conference.

Kole Karaba scored 21 points and Marlin Pogodzinski added 16 for Owen-Withee.

Jack Bezlyk had 21 points and 16 rebounds to lead Spencer.

Spencer plays at Abbotsford as part of a girls-boys nonconference doubleheader on Monday. The girls game starts at 6 p.m., with the boys to follow at approximately 7:45 p.m.
