Columbus Catholic boys basketball drops opener at Assumption

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic boys basketball team started slow and couldn’t recover, dropping its season-opener to Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 58-43 in a semifinal of the Cranberry Classic on Friday night at Assumption High School.

The game was the season-opener for both teams.

Assumption outscored the Dons 31-22 in the first half and 27-21 in the second as it held Columbus’ offense down.

Nick Malovrh had 13 points and Jarred Mandel added 11 for the Dons.

Joe Grundhoffer topped Assumption with 16 points.

Columbus plays Nekoosa in the third-place game of the tournament on Saturday night.
