WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield gymnastics team finished fifth and did not have any individual state qualifiers for the first time in three years after competing at the WIAA Division 1 sectional Saturday at Lincoln High School.
Eau Claire Memorial/North (136.925) and Hudson (136.85) earned the top two team positions to qualify for the 2018 WIAA State Gymnastics Championships, which will be at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln on March 2-3. Marshfield was fifth with a score of 129.75.
Marshfield junior Emma Haugen, who reached the state meet in each of her first two seasons for the Tigers, will not be making a return trip after coming close in a pair of events.
Haugen, who competed in the vault at state as a freshman, and in the all-around last year, tied for sixth in the floor exercise with a score of 9.1, missing out on a state berth by just 1/100th of a point. She also eighth in the vault with a score of 8.675, less than 1/10th of a point out of the fifth and final state qualifying spot.
Haugen finished 14th in the all-around with 32.625 points.
Marshfield senior Macey Smith was 16th in the all-around (32.225), with her best individual event coming in the vault, where she finished 12th with a score of 8.55.
Eau Claire Memorial/North’s Natalie Matton won the all-around with a score of 36.15 as she took first place in both the balance beam (9.525) and the floor (9.3).
Paige Hillman of Hudson, who finished second in the all-around, won the other two events, taking first in the uneven bars (9.2) and the vault (9.0).
