Quick start sparks Spencer girls

LOYAL – Spencer outscored Loyal 13-3 in the first quarter and cruised from there, downing the Greyhounds 51-36 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division girls basketball game Monday night.

Courtney Schulz was 9 of 10 from the free-throw line and scored a game-high 15 points for the Rockets, who improved to 5-3 overall and 5-2 in the Cloverbelt East. Loyal falls to 5-6 and 4-3 in conference play.

Stacey Baumgartner added 11 points on 5 of 6 shooting for Spencer. Overall, the Rockets shot just 31 percent from the field (15 of 46), but made 21 of 26 free throws.

Defensively, Spencer held Loyal to 21 percent shooting (9 of 43). The Greyhounds hung around by making 18 of 24 free throws, but did not outscore Spencer in any quarter.

The Rockets play a nonconference game at Abbotsford on Tuesday and return to Cloverbelt action at first place Neillsville on Thursday.
