MARSHFIELD – The Spencer/Columbus Catholic football team showed its dominance with an overpowering second-quarter performance and went on to rout Cadott 51-0 at the Columbus Catholic Homecoming Game on Saturday afternoon at Beell Stadium.

After an unusually slow start, the Rockets took a 3-0 lead on a 21-yard field goal by Evan Dieringer with 2:07 to go in the first quarter.

Then the fireworks began.

Spencer/Columbus scored five touchdowns in the second quarter and the Rockets quickly turned the game into a blowout.

Senior quarterback Jarred Mandel threw touchdown passes of 32, 49 and 8 yards to Austin Bacon, and ran for a 15-yard score as the Rockets’ offense got things rolling.

S/C also scored on a 43-yard fumble return by Hayden Bauman, the second time in three games Bauman returned a fumble for a score.

Spencer/Columbus held Cadott to just 88 total yards and four first downs in another dominating performance as it posted its second-straight shutout.

“Our defense was really great,” Spencer/Columbus head coach Jason Gorst said. “The turnovers that Hayden, Jarred and Austin forced were pretty big. Credit to Cadott for coming out and playing physical. I thought we responded really well in the second quarter.

“Evan Dieringer had a great game. I really appreciate his commitment to the team to play through an injury for us. Jarred and Austin really were working well together on offense, and our offensive linemen did a great job in our screen game.”

Mandel finished with 173 yards passing, 105 to Bacon on four plays.

Carson Hildebrandt finished with 61 yards rushing to lead a balanced ground attack. He had a 16-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Will Gorst ran in from the 2 in the fourth to round out the scoring.

The victory sets up what will be the Cloverbelt Conference championship game next Friday, Oct. 5, when Spencer/Columbus hosts Eau Claire Regis at 7 p.m. at Spencer High School. Both teams are 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the Cloverbelt after Regis whipped Colby 35-7 on Saturday. The game will be live-streamed at zaleskisportsshow.com and on its Facebook page.
