MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield cross country teams had hoped for a pair of titles at the Marshfield Invitational on Tuesday.

However, it was Wausau East that grabbed multiple championships and the Tigers had to settle for two second-place finishes at their home invitational at Wildwood Park.

The Wausau East girls had four of the top nine finishes, including winner Ashley Eckhoff (15:13.59), to finish with 52 points and easily outdistance second-place Marshfield, which had 94 points.

Wausau East’s boys edged the Tigers 46-59 with six runners in the top 14.

Marshfield freshman Rebecca Voss, coming off a strong fourth-place performance at the Columbus Catholic Invitational on Saturday, was two seconds off that time but finished second in 15:26.31 in blustery conditions Tuesday.

The Tigers also got an eighth-place finish from Jennifer Kaiser (16:37.76) and Lisa Kaiser took 14th (17:01.63).

“Rebecca Voss placing second in this field of female runners is simply outstanding,” Marshfield coach Dan Akin said. “Jennifer Kaiser really ran well today, and Lisa Kaiser also ran well placing 14th overall.”

Auburndale’s Danica Harrison (15:44.90) edged East’s Katelyn Stine by 0.35 of a second with a strong kick in the final 200 yards to take third. Sam Karl was 15th for the Apaches (17:12.81), who finished fifth as a team to win the small school championship.

Columbus Catholic had an incomplete girls team, with only four runners, but got one strong individual performance as Claire Pinter finished 13th in a time of 16:56.78.

The Spencer girls were 12th, led by Samantha Hoeldtke’s 43rd-place finish in a time of 18:28.56.

Marshfield’s boys had three runners in the top seven, but East was able to bring in runners in the 6, 8, 9, 11, and 12 spots to capture the team title.

Marshfield’s Bryan Zimmerman led the race at the halfway mark but was surpassed in the final 1,000 meters and finished fourth with a time of 17:40.85.

Chippewa Falls’ Andrew Faris edged Reese Butterfuss of Tomah at the wire, winning by just 0.36 of a second with a time of 17:03.25.

Marshfield’s Adam Voss (17:45.84) and Aaron Anderson (17:49.12) finshed fifth and seventh, respectively.

“We had six varsity athletes on themedal stand and had some huge improvements again from Adam Voss, Aaron Anderson and Bryan Zimmerman,” Akin said. “We only had two days recovery since the Columbus meet and the kids responded with some good races.”

Auburndale’s got a 10th-place finish from Luke Haas (17:57.15) and took eighth as a team.

Columbus Catholic was 16th. Travis Wienke led the Dons by finishing 60th in 20:06.78.

Spencer had just four runners and was led by a 44th-place finish from Dan Schubert (19:24.48).
