Auburndale girls qualify for state after winning WIAA Division 3 cross country sectional title

ATHENS – For the fifth year in a row, the Auburndale girls cross country team will be going to state.

Auburndale won the girls team title at the WIAA Division 3 cross country sectional on Friday at Erbach Park, claiming a spot at next week’s state meet.

The 2019 WIAA State Cross Country Championships will be held at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday, Nov. 2.

Marathon finished second in the girls team standings, also earning a spot at the state meet.

The top two teams and top five individuals not on those teams qualify for state.

The top five finishers in the girls race move on to state, led by sectional champion Savannah Schley of Loyal, who won the race in 19:35.4.

Edgar’s Marissa Ellenbecker (19:35.5), Wisconsin Rapids Assumption’s Grace Dolan (20:05.9), Kallie Volk of Three Lakes (21:12.6) and Morgan Schnelle of Edgar (20:14.5) rounded out the top five to secure state meet spots.

Auburndale’s McKenna Zieher was sixth in 20:15.0, Errika Zenner was right behind in seventh (20:29.5), Macie Schmeiser finished 12th (20:51.0), Jordyn Karl was 14th (21:12.7), and Autumn Richardson took 18th (21:32.5) as the Apaches finished with 57 team points.

Jada Prihoda led Marathon, taking ninth in 20:34.7 and Laci Hoeksema was 15th in 21:17.7.

Stratford was 11th, Spencer 13th and Marshfield Columbus Catholic 16th in the team standings.

Lauren Kraus led Stratford, taking 36th in 22:51.0; Spencer’s top runner was Emily Wehrman, who was 35th in 22:42.4; and Holly Dean was Columbus Catholic’s top runner, finishing 63rd in 24:39.3.

Stevens Point Pacelli and Marathon were the top two boys teams at the sectional, earning state meet spots.

Gabe Herter led Pacelli, taking fourth in 16:55.7, and Jay Engebretson was ninth in 17:21.0 for the Cardinals.

Marathon’s top runner was Will Prihoda, wo was eighth in 17:19.5.

Athens was third, Stratford fourth, and Auburndale fifth in the team standings, all of which had one individual qualify for state.

Garrett Dolan of Wisconsin Rapids Assumption won the boys race in 16:26.9, with Athens’ Johnathon Nowacki second in 16:50.3, as both earned individual slots to state.

Other individual state qualifiers were Rosholt’s Matt Ross, who was third in 16:53.6; Stratford’s James Heeg, who finished fifth in 17:01.6; and Auburndale’s Carl Lundgren, who took sixth in 17:02.8.

Spencer finished 10th and was led by Malachai Anderson, who finished 63rd in 20:34.0.

Marshfield Columbus Catholic had an incomplete team with only three runners. Andrew Scheer led the Dons, taking 26th in 18:38.1.

The Division 3 girls race will be at 1:20 p.m. and the boys race at 3:10 p.m. at the state meet.
